== Supported Platforms ==

The [http://vhg.cmp.uea.ac.uk/tech/jas/std/ current version of JASigning] is intended to run on Windows (XP, Vista, 7) and on the latest releases of Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6. JASigning is ''not'' supported on Linux at present.

It is preferable to run JASigning with an up-to-date Java 6 run-time (JRE), although it should run with the latest versions of Java 5.

On the supported platforms, that is, Windows and Mac OS X, JASigning supports both 32-bit and 64-bit operation. Which of this modes it actually runs in on any given occasion depends on several factors:

* Whether or not the processor supports 64-bit operation.
* Whether or not the operating system supports 64-bit operation.
* Whether the system has a 32-bit or a 64-bit Java installation (or both) -- and what options are set in the Java Control Panel (Windows) or Java Preferences app (Mac OS X).
* For a JASigning applet: whether the browser is running in 32-bit or 64-bit mode.

=== Browsers ===

JASigning applets should work with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome on Windows, and with Safari and Firefox on Mac OS X.

JASigning applets run in Chrome on Mac OS X -- but they do so invisibly, due to an issue with Chrome's current OpenGL interface on that platform.

JASigning applets may work with browsers other than those mentioned, such as Opera, but our testing in such cases is at best limited.

Browsers in which the HTML Applets have been tested include Internet Explorer (PC), Safari (Mac, PC), Firefox (Mac, PC), Opera (Mac, PC), Chrome (PC). Please help us complete the list.

There has been little testing of JASigning on Windows 7.

=== Mac OS X Snow Leopard ===

For the current release version on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard it is necessary to run applications and applets in 32-bit mode (as 64-bit versions of the native libraries are not included).

For Apps please save the application bundle to the desktop or your favoured location. Loading will fail, but by using Get Info in the Finder on the application it is possible to select 32-bit operation, which should be successful.

For HTML Applets it is necessary to run the browser in 32-bit mode. For example, a copy of Safari can be made and set to open in 32-bit mode via Get Info. HTML pages using the Applets should then work correctly.

A development version supports 64-bit on Snow Leopard and will be released after a testing period.

Driving the SiGML Player App

This page describes the protocol a client app needs to follow in order to drive the SiGML (Service) Player app.

The SiGML Player accepts connection requests on standard TCP/IP port number 8052.

Each time the client wants to dispatch a SiGML text to the player it performs the following sequence:

* Make a new connection to that port (8052) on the server, i.e. the host system running the SiGML Player app, which may or may not be the "localhost".

* Send the SiGML text on the resulting output stream.
** If the SiGML text explicitly specifies an encoding in an initial XML declaration then the text should be sent as a byte stream with that encoding.
** If there's no explicit encoding it should be sent as a UTF-8 stream.

* Close the stream and the connection.

The protocol is extremely simple: so there's no feedback from the server to tell the client when the performance of a SiGML text is complete -- or indeed whether there are any errors in the SiGML text.

If a new text is dispatched before performance of the previous one is complete, then that previous performance is immediately abandoned in favour of the new one.
So, although in principle the client could be on the opposite side of the world from the server, in practice it does not make much sense if the client, i.e. its user, does not actually have line-of-sight contact with the server.

| For the time being the supported platforms for JASigning are Mac OS X and Windows, but not Linux. So the short answer to your question at present is "No".

The reason for this is that the software includes native libraries, and it requires time and effort to port those libraries to a new platform. We hope to be able to do this in the future but at present we have other more urgent priorities, and so unfortunately we are not able at this stage to provide a specific date for Linux support.

| (1) Re Graphical Interface To the Editor: I'm not sure what you mean here. The editor has a graphical rather than a command line user interface. But if you mean "Does the editor directly use the avatar?", then the answer is "No". Once you have created a HamNoSys/SiGML sequence you can get any of the available avatars, including Marc, to perform it.

(2) To deploy our signing avatar system on your own web site, rather than using the Applications and Applet made available via ours, you would need to negotiate with us, initially by e-mail ([mailto:Cmp_virtualsigning@uea.ac.uk]). To support this requires work on our part, so if you really wished to do it we would usually expect payment, either in money or "in kind".
